Finally, it's over!
It all started awhile back with the removal of the fluorescent lighting in the kitchen...
...and snowballed into new EVERYTHING!
Here are some pictures of the progression over the last month.
(For my mom's sake though, if you come to see the changes in person, you still need to be "wowed.")
Day 1:
Before the construction started. You can see that the lighting in the kitchen has already been changed. Time for everything else!
Day 2:
Construction Begins! First they took out the counter top on the bar, then the hanging cupboards.
Day 3:
The rest of the countertops and the sink are removed.
(Really, it took more than a day, but for the purpose of the blog, we're defining a "day" as a significant difference in construction.)
Day 4:
New countertops! It's called silestone. It's anti-bacterial and harder than granite. You can't use ammonia-based cleaning products on it, but that's probably a good thing anyway. Regardless, it's WAAAAY better than the yucky grout and tile counters we had before!
Day 5:
The plumber came and put in the new sink hardware. After this, we had about 3 weeks to wait before the cabinets came in. This is when we painted. (You can see those pictures in "Tales of the Unemployed" - a January post.)
In the meantime, the kitchen lived in the living room. It's amazing how much stuff you can pack behind closed cupboard doors! It filled the whole living room!
Day 6:
Cabinet guys! The picture above is actually from the first day the cabinet guys (actually, it was only 1 guy) were here. You can see the new cabinet color on the bar, and the more orange, old cabinet color on the far cabinets.
The picture below shows all the cabinets re-faced.
Day 7:
Ta da! A finished kitchen, restocked with half the stuff that was in the living room (the other half lives at a thrift store near you), new cabinet doors and drawers!
It's very nice!!
That's our new kitchen! The old kitchen did well for us for the last 27 years, but it was time to upgrade. It is hoped that in the next few years, when the house is put up for sale, that it will help with the resale value.
I don't like to think about it.
The selling of the house, I mean.
So, in the meantime, I will enjoy the new kitchen...
...and the now dust-free house.
